Washington Mutual Inc. is listed on NASDAQ (DIMEZ). With a history dating back to 1889, Washington Mutual, Inc. (together with its subsidiaries, Washington Mutual,) is a retailer of financial services to consumers and small businesses. Based on our consolidated assets at December 31, 2004 we were the largest thrift holding company in the United States and the seventh largest among all U.S.-based bank and thrift holding companies. Our earnings are primarily driven by real estate secured lending and deposit taking activities which generate net interest income and by activities that generate noninterest income, including the sale and servicing of loans and providing fee-based services to our customers. Real estate secured loans and mortgage-backed securities generate more than 90% of interest income and this concentration is likely to continue as a result of our decision to exit certain non-core businesses, such as lending to mid- and large-sized companies.
