Mitsubishi Tokyo Financial Group, Inc. is a joint stock company (kabushiki kaisha) incorporated in Japan under the Commercial Code of Japan. On April 2, 2001, Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi, Mitsubishi Trust Bank and Nippon Trust Bank established Mitsubishi Tokyo Financial Group, Inc. to be a holding company for the three of them. Before that, each of the banks had been a publicly held company. On April 2, 2001, through a stock-for-stock exchange, they became wholly-owned subsidiaries of Mitsubishi Tokyo Financial Group, Inc., and the former shareholders of the three banks became shareholders of Mitsubishi Tokyo Financial Group, Inc. Nippon Trust Bank was later merged into Mitsubishi Trust Bank. As a result, Mitsubishi Tokyo Financial Group, Inc.
